Welcome to Howden

The old market town of Howden is dominated by its Minster, which leads to a beautifully preserved Georgian town centre with narrow cobbled streets and restored buildings.

Walk through Howden's narrow streets to admire its fine Georgian architecture, as well as some attractive shops, historic coaching inns and charming tea rooms. There's also a small market which takes place each Friday at Howden Shire Hall.
Close to the town centre is the historic Ashes Playing Fields with gardens, a play park and recreational areas for all to use. On the outskirts of town, Howden Marsh is a lovely place for a quiet stroll, with a lake and small islands which have become a habitat for birds and wildlife.
At the heart of the town is Howden Shire Hall, a multi-functional building used for community hires such as parties, wedding receptions, fund raising events, and weekly classes. It’s also centre for Arts, hosting live music, theatre and comedy events as well as Howden's very own cinema.
In the foyer of the hall is an Information Point where visitors can find out about attractions, services and facilities in the town.

Howden and Covid-19 support

Howden Helpers is a group of volunteers originally brought together to help with Howden events like Tour de Yorkshire and Vintage Day.

More recently, the group has re-focussed its efforts on supporting all of those in Howden and the surrounding villages who may be needing help throughout the Coronavirus pandemic.

Now that the lockdown is easing what can we do to pass a bit of time ?     How about making a movie?

We'd like everyone who is up for it to make a short film in one of the following categories:

1) Music - a live performance, a karaoke track whatever you like so long as it's music based

2) Dance - From Ballroom to Ballet to Boogie nights or Kitchen Disco

3) Drama - a spoken word piece whether that be a poem, a playlet or a dramatic reading.... In short whatever you feel like doing!

4) Documentary - Talk about your feelings and experiences of the lockdown - or use Zoom to record interviews with your family and friends. We'll all be telling our grandchildren about the last few months in a few years time - why not record something now to show them then?

5) Animation - this might seem a bit of a stretch but there are hours of resources on YouTube showing you how to make stop frame animation with a smart phone camera...and it will keep kids occupied for hours!

6) Commercial - a special category for all local businesses to produce a commercial (max 1 minute long) to entice customers back into their shop when the lockdown is finally loosened.

The only rules are:
No entry should be over 5 minutes long
Films must be made observing the guidance on social distancing (which will make mass line-dancing a bit tricky)
There will be prizes (but they will only serve to prove that winning doesn't matter, it's the taking part).
I'm here to help with any technical advice and a degree of editing and titling - just ask!
When you have a piece to submit send it to Howdenhelpers@gmail.com by email, Wetransfer or whatever method you can find!
All the entries will be put up on the Howden Helpers YouTube page as they come in and we will set a closing date for sometime around the end of June.

WINNER WINNER, CHICKEN DINNER!
