What is Helston Climate Action Group?

Helston Climate Action Group (HCAG) is a collaboration between Helston Town Council and members of the Helston community. It was formed to work with Helston Town Council to achieve its climate goals, set when it declared a climate emergency in March 2019.

In September 2019, HCAG published a Climate Action Plan for Helston, an informative handbook of ideas and practical projects that we believe will help Helston on its journey to carbon neutrality. Some of these can be put into action at the individual level, but others will need the combined efforts of the whole Helston community. We hope this document will inspire you! You can find out a little more about a couple of our flagship projects that are already underway below.

You can read the plan online, or download a PDF copy.

Keep in Touch!

Helston Climate Action Group gets together regularly (see Climate Hub and Repair Café below), and all are welcome!

The easiest way to keep up to date is:

Helston Repair Café

Repair Cafés are free meeting places that are all about repairing things, together. You'll find knowledgeable volunteers and the tools needed to help you repair your household items for free. After a successful launch in October 2019, the Repair Café will be meeting at CAST on the third Sunday of the month from 1.30pm to 4.00pm (except for December, when our repairers will be taking a well-earned rest!)
You can keep up to date with Repair Café events on its own Facebook page, or you can email us at helstonrepaircafe@gmail.com.

Forest for Helston

As part of our commitment to nature restoration and reducing carbon emissions, we will be supporting Cornwall Council’s Forest for Cornwall project with our own tree planting here in Helston. One of our aims is to plant a tree for every child in Helston. In line with this, we will be announcing several projects over the months ahead, and will keep you posted on the Climate Action Group facebook page. In the meantime, if you are interested in planting trees please get in touch with our project leads at forestforhelston@gmail.com.

Helston Climate Hub

The easiest way to get involved with Helston’s efforts to tackle the climate and environmental crisis is to come along to our Climate Hub on a Monday evening, from 6-8pm at the Guildhall. These are generally informal get-togethers, though we do have a more formal meeting on the first Monday of the month. We will be trying to build the hub into a source of information and advice on everything related to the climate crisis. Do follow our HCAG Facebook page for regular updates on what’s happening at the meetings, and for any cancellations (for example around Christmas and New Year).
