In 2022 it will be 700 years since there was a bloody and famous battle fought here in Boroughbridge during the reign of King Edward II, which threatened to topple the security of the power of the English throne.
To mark the occasion and the 700th anniversary of the Battle that took place there are events planned in commemoration of the events of 1322.
Planning includes living history events, medieval weapons demonstrations and battlefield tours.
For over 500 years an eighteen-foot-high freestone had stood in Boroughbridge on the Market Place of the Buttermarket to commemorate the battle and it’s outcomes in 1322. This original stone was moved in 1852 to the local village of Aldborough and within Boroughbridge itself there only remains a small plaque on the bridge over the Ure to mark the historic event.
The Battlefields Trust and Boroughbridge Town Council are working on an event on Saturday 12th March with funding from Miller Homes to commemorate the Battle in this 700th anniversary year.
On Saturday, March 12, a wreath will be laid at the Battlecross in Aldborough at 9.30am.
Then moving into Boroughbridge Town after this wreath laying, the 3 Swords Medieval Group will demonstrate arms and armour on the shared community space at the rear of the Back Lane car park.
Louise Whittaker, of The Battlefields Trust will be giving a guided tour of the battlefield and
Boroughbridge Historical Society are holding a complimentary Battle exhibition.
In addition to this day of activities and as a more long-standing commemoration, medieval artwork by the Yorkshire Region Chair of The Battlefields Trust, Chris Rock, is being incorporated into a series of display boards and accompanying leaflets for a permanent Battlefield Trail to be created in the locality.
It is hoped a series of other commemorative events planned in Boroughbridge, will take place throughout the year to mark this historic 700th anniversary.
As further events are confirmed we will make sure they are advertised here.
